The Gift of Hearing By Don Lawrence, Owner & Board-Certified Hearing Specialist

When I think about the gift of hearing, I don’t picture devices or charts—I picture faces.
I see the smile when a grandchild’s laugh comes through clearly again, the relief when a simple conversation at the diner doesn’t feel like work, the quiet confidence that returns when someone realizes, “I’m part of things again.” That’s why I opened Lawrence Hearing and why, more than a decade later, I still love this work. Hearing connects us to the people we love and the place we call home. It’s not a luxury; it’s a lifeline.
As a board-certified hearing specialist and longtime Hudson Valley neighbor, my promise is simple: we’ll treat you like family, listen before we recommend, and use the best tools we have—precision fitting, thoughtful programming, and ongoing, no-charge care—to help you hear naturally in the real moments of your life. Titles and certificates matter (I’m licensed in New York, an instructor, and certified in tinnitus care), but what matters most is how you feel when you walk out our door: understood, supported, and hopeful.
What that gift looks like—in our patients’ words
Some days the gift is being heard first. As Kenneth S. told us, “Brandon did what none of the others did—he listened… no hard sell, just options.” That simple, human moment—listening before doing—sets the tone for everything that follows.
Other days, the gift is feeling like family. Stan R. made the trip from Ellenville and wrote, “From the time I walked in… you have been like family to me and my wife… it’s worth the trip to be treated like family instead of a customer off the street.”
Sometimes, the gift is confidence. Lucy B. shared, “I was shocked and kind of embarrassed to realize that I needed hearing aids, but they helped me get over that.” For Jason L., at 91, the gift is staying engaged: “The knowledge, care and patience… has made a difference in my social involvement.”
The gift can also be honesty and fit. Girard F. appreciated that Don “recommended not the most expensive, but the one that best fits my hearing loss.” And when technology and care come together, expectations aren’t just met—they’re exceeded: “Every aid I’ve purchased meets and exceeds expectations,” says Jeff D., adding that service is “+++ AAA.”
Our promise, in practice

-
Precision fitting: We measure, program, and fine-tune so speech feels clear and natural, not loud or harsh.
-
Lifetime support: No charge for office visits—ever. Retesting, adjustments, programming, minor repairs, tubing changes, even loaners—on us.
-
Local care: Two offices (Middletown & Warwick), a team that knows your name, and the time to answer every question.
In Closing…
I still get the same feeling I did on day one when someone hears clearly again—a mix of relief, gratitude, and joy that never gets old. I love this work because it isn’t about gadgets; it’s about people. It’s the quick check-in at the front desk, the stories about grandkids, the “you won’t believe what I heard this weekend” moments. That connection to our patients—and to this community—is why I’m here early and why I’m proud to put my name on the door.
I live here. I shop here. I run into patients at the diner and the grocery store. When we wave across the produce aisle, I’m reminded that hearing care is really community care. You trust us with something personal, and we take that trust seriously—listening first, fitting precisely, and standing beside you for as long as you’ll have us.
As we keep doing this work together, I hope you’ll give yourself—or someone you love—the gift of hearing. Not just louder sound, but clearer conversations, easier laughter, and the simple confidence of feeling included. If you’re ready, we’re here—no pressure, no charge to talk—just neighbors helping neighbors hear their lives again.
